Biology with a (Spanish) Accent brings together the disciplines of art and science through art prints derived from microscopy and biology experiments. The works originated as short educational videos posted on Instagram and TikTok, where Sánchez Blanco has built a wide following by using social media to make biology engaging and accessible. In bringing these images from social media into the gallery, the exhibition highlights how science can be experienced as art.
Interactive QR codes embedded throughout the exhibition link visitors back to the original digital content, creating a bridge between the virtual and physical worlds and emphasizing the project’s central theme: connecting science, art, and social media.
This work is about showing that biology is not only a subject to be studied, but also a source of wonder, beauty, and artistic expression. The exhibition reflects the interdisciplinary mission of CT State Capital, highlighting innovative programming that encourages collaboration across departments and demonstrates how art and science can complement and enrich one another.
Adolfo Sánchez Blanco is a Spanish biologist established in the United States. Trained as an ecologist in Spain, he later earned a Ph.D. in Biomedical Science at the University of Connecticut Medical School. He went on to conduct molecular genetics research on the biology of aging at Stanford University and at the Cancer Research Center of Salamanca, Spain, as a fellow of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC).
About ten years ago, Sánchez Blanco switched his career to teaching. He is now a Biology professor at CT State Community College Capital. His teaching and educational outreach efforts have earned him multiple distinctions, including the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities Board of Regents Teaching Award. His work has received media attention from outlets such as Newsweek, USA Today, The Weather Channel, Univision, and Estrella TV.
A molecular biologist by training and a naturalist at heart, Sánchez Blanco brings a personal appreciation for art to his social media educational work. Biology with a (Spanish) Accent is an invitation to the public to experience science as art.
