What is Place-Based Learning?

Place-based Education takes the place where a school is located and incorporates it into the curriculum. Thus, museums, historical societies, parks, community centers, care facilities, local businesses, government agencies, and other valuable community resources become an extension of the classroom. 

I'm a student, how can I take part in the HHP?

  • Find free and discounted tickets to museums, concerts, and plays with your student ID.

  • Register for a place-based class.

  • Join the Liberal Arts Action Lab (earn 6 credits for one class). 

  • Attend One Note and One Play for $5.

  • Watch a Hartford History Lecture online.

  • Stop by the Mallett Art Gallery in the lobby.

How do community partners benefit from the HHP?

  • Engage Capital's young and diverse student population

  • Collaborate with Capital faculty to enhance learning

  • Grow opportunities for staffing and internships

  • Develop the audience of the future 

  • Enhance student engagement with Hartford

I'm a faculty member, how can I take part in the HHP?

  • Explore HHP Partners to familiarize yourself with the city as our campus.

  • Save the dates for One Note and One Play performances this semester.

  • Add class visits to your syllabus before the semester starts.

  • Bring an HHP partner into your classroom by signing up for a workshop.

  • Browse OER projects and extra credit assignments.

  • Looking for online content? Visit the Hartford History Lecture archive for local history.

Are there HHP perks for staff?

  • Yes! HHP events are intended for the entire college community.

  • Staff members have access to  discounted or free admission at all partner sites.

  • Special performance discounts are also available for One Note and One Play.

  • Workshops are open to staff, reach out to a department chair or faculty member for specific dates.
