Fall 2023: Quiara Alegría Hudes

On Tuesday October 24, 2023, CT State Capital held a special series of events welcoming Playwright Quiara Alegría Hudes: "Living Between Cultures: Identity and Belonging".  Preceding the main event, a conversation with Melia Bensussen, Artistic Director of Hartford Stage, a welcome reception was held at Christ Church Cathedral with live music by Carlos Hernández Chávez & Gonzalo Cortés.

Quiara Alegría Hudes is the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright of “Water By the Spoonful”; author of a memoir, My Broken Language; and screenwriter for the major motion picture In the Heights. Previously, she wrote the book (aka script) for the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical and Hollywood blockbuster In the Heights and authored other plays and musicals that have been produced around the world. Her notable essays include “High Tide of Heartbreak” in American Theater Magazine and “Corey Couldn’t Take It Anymore” in The Cut. In opposition of the carceral state, Hudes and her cousin founded Emancipated Stories, a platform where people behind bars can share one page of their life story with the world. As a barrio feminist and joyous mischief maker, Quiara y su hermana created the Latinx Casting Manifesto.

About

Mission

Herencias Latinas is a segment of the Hartford Heritage Project focused on Latino/a (Latinx) culture. The goal of this initiative is to collaborate with area organizations in order to develop educational opportunities for students, faculty and staff to understand and appreciate the diversity and complexity and history of the Latino population in the Hartford area.

History

In Spring 2023 the college officially launched Herencias Latinas, the segment focused on Latino culture. A series of programs followed, bringing to light the  many facets of Latino life in the Hartford area. Herencias Latinas at CT State Capital establishes new connections each semester. Partnering with area organizations and developing educational activities and initiatives, we're working to  understand and appreciate the diverse and complex history of Hartford's Latino population.
