Does Street Art Belong in a Museum?

Students examine the question of whether or not street art belongs in a museum. After reading about a recent street art exhibition called “We Are Here” at the Petit Palais in Paris, France, students explore the topic in greater depth, including the history of street art, major artists in the genre, and the benefits of street art in communities. Then, students engage in field research by visiting Heaven Skate and Graffiti Park and some of the murals and sculptures in Capital’s neighborhood, and touring the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art. The unit culminates with analysis of the initial article and question “does street art belong in a museum?” Students build upon their readings and research to draw their own conclusions and develop their positions.
