I teach mathematics to Capital students and I have been a strong advocate of HHP, in particular the "One Play" program. My reasons are many, beginning with the fact that I love the arts! I believe arts provide an opportunity to learn new things, experience other cultures, and overall enrich our lives. I also believe that education is about becoming a more well-rounded person, and this includes experiencing and appreciating the arts. The "One Play" program is an opportunity for students (along with staff and faculty) to experience the arts by attending plays at the Hartford Stage, an award-winning professional theatre, for an inexpensive price, and that is why I strongly encourage my math students to participate. I do this in part by offering extra credit for attending the plays and sharing a brief comment about the play (no long written reports). Often many of my students tell me that this is the first play they have ever attended and plan to go to more in the future. That makes me happy. Another benefit to this program is that the arts organizations need young people to become patrons of the arts so they will continue their valuable work and I believe that the "One Play" program helps to do that too.
